Flash floods sever key road links in Konjic region

Husein Hodzic from the Konjic Civil Protection Service told N1 that the rapid melting of snow caused water levels to surge, particularly in the Neretvica region, which had experienced similar floods just a year ago, primarily impacting areas where riverbeds were already damaged.

"This led to overflowing and the severing of road communications. Specifically, the regional road running from Ostrozac to Fojnica is interrupted in several locations; it is not possible to travel that way. Several local roads are also damaged," Hodzic explained. Construction teams have been on the ground since the early morning hours, attempting to restore functionality.

However, Hodzic stressed that the regional road will likely remain closed for several days due to the immense scale of the damage.

"This morning in Buturovic Polje, we had five or six buildings that were threatened; water entered two buildings and reached several houses," he reported. "But with maximum engagement from the construction operators, significant overflowing was prevented. We now have a somewhat better forecast; the rain has stopped, and the water level is dropping. We hope there will be no significant problems in the coming period."

Hodzic confirmed that repair work on embankments and fortifications has begun, but the most pressing issue remains the regional road, which is currently 100% blocked, leaving significant villages along the Neretvica River valley without primary road access.

"We are working on alternative routes, but it will certainly not be possible to use this regional road for another day or two," Hodzic concluded for N1.
