The adoption of the UN Resolution on the Genocide in Srebrenica will not bring anything special to us or to anyone else, but it is important that we have closed the cycle regarding international justice and acceptance of responsibility, said the president of the Association of Victims and Witnesses of Genocide Murat Tahirovic.
“We all know that the Netherlands has accepted the responsibility through court verdicts in that country. Through this Resolution, the UN accepted responsibility for its role in the genocide in Srebrenica. In a way, Montenegro has also accepted the facts about the genocide in Srebrenica through its amendments and by voting in favour of the Resolution. In a way, we isolated Serbia and the BiH entity of Republika Srpska (RS) from everyone else in the world, especially in this part of Europe”, Tahirovic explained. #related-news_0
He believes that the Resolution will not “bring anything special” in the future.
“It will be studied in educational systems around the world, and I hope that it will be initiated, first of all, here in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH) entity, to introduce the study of the genocide in Srebrenica, through cantonal educational institutions, so that we can be an example to others, like those in the RS or Serbia. That could be a concrete result of the Resolution,” said the president of the Association of Genocide Victims and Witnesses.
He believes that the introduction of the study of genocide in educational institutions in the RS and Serbia could take some time, but the goal is primarily to do something about it in the FBiH.
The International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica was officially included in the official calendar of the United Nations, on Friday.
“It will also be commemorated in that way every year, on July 11,” Tahirovic noted.
“On July 1, an exhibition of photographs and other artefacts from Srebrenica, organized by the Srebrenica Memorial Center, is planned to open in the building of the UN General Assembly. A day later, there is a conference at the UN building, which will be attended by the Chief Prosecutor of the Hague Tribunal, representatives of the UN, the Secretary-General, our ambassador… And on July 3rd, the opening of the monument, i.e. the ‘Flower of Srebrenica’, in front of the UN building was planned,” Tahirovic said.
He stated that everything else about the monument has been completed, from the conceptual design and other procedures. The monument should be two by two meters big.
