Fmr High Rep Petritsch in Potocari: Truth, not hatred, must be message from Srebrenica

Former High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Wolfgang Petritsch, visited the Srebrenica Memorial Centre on the eve of the commemoration and collective funeral for seven more victims of the 1995 genocide. Speaking from Potocari, Petritsch reflected on the enduring legacy of denial and stressed the importance of truth and reconciliation.

“Genocide denial has a long tradition,” Petritsch said, addressing the persistent refusal by some to acknowledge the atrocities committed in Srebrenica.
“It seems to be a part of human nature to deny the horror, whether committed by oneself or on one’s behalf. But the main message from Srebrenica must be truth, not hatred,” he emphasised.
Petritsch acknowledged the deep pain and understandable resentment felt by survivors and the families of those killed. Still, he underscored the importance of those involved in the atrocities taking the step toward acknowledgement and reconciliation.

“That’s important. We must find a way, just as Europe did. Look at Germany and France: they fought each other for centuries, yet they eventually found a solution and now work together. They respect each other,” he noted.
Alongside truth, Petritsch highlighted mutual respect as a fundamental building block for peace and healing, something he believes is still lacking in the region.
“Besides truth, mutual respect is another key word. That’s something that is still missing. I sincerely hope that on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of this horrific genocide and war, this message will finally be taken seriously,” he said.
This year, seven victims of the Srebrenica genocide will be laid to rest at the Potocari Memorial Centre. Thousands are expected to attend the commemoration, continuing to honour the memory of the more than 8,000 men and boys murdered in July 1995.
