In a recent appearance on N1, Ivo Komsic, a former member of the Presidency of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, stated that if the European Union wishes to accelerate the country's accession, it must appoint a "mentor state" to lead the process.

According to Komsic, this mentor cannot be Croatia or any other neighboring country. Instead, it must be a strong European state that would work alongside the High Representative to guide Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) into the EU. This mechanism is designed to eliminate political blockades that have historically hindered progress.

Komsic emphasized that this approach does not constitute an occupation but rather a method to help develop domestic solutions. He proposed that the EU should stand behind this model, directing domestic forces to adopt necessary chapters. If the domestic Parliament fails to act, the High Representative would then step in to make the final decisions.

Regional influence and the "Scandinavian model"

The proposed model aims to sideline the political influence of regional leaders and local figures, specifically mentioning Plenkovic, Vucic, Dodik, and Covic. Komcis attributed the original concept to Vesna Pusic, who described it as a "Scandinavian model" previously used by other countries to enter the Union.

When asked which country could fulfill this role, Komsic suggested Denmark, citing it as one of the most organized countries within the EU. He believes that adopting this model would permanently end blockades within the Parliament.

Tradition of coexistence and political reform

Regarding the social fabric of the country, Komsic asserted that people in BiH have always lived with one another, rather than just side-by-side, noting that for Catholics, Muslims, and Orthodox Christians, "the other" is an essential part of their identity.

To ensure a functional future, he advocated for the exclusion of ethnic parties from politics, either through democratic elections or direct pressure from the European Union

Geopolitical stability

Komsic noted that the United States would not oppose such a solution. He stated that the current US administration under President Donald Trump remains interested in establishing a "normal state" and stability in the region.

He concluded by pointing out that without this shift, the country will continue to "tread water," while domestic leaders like Milorad Dodik have already shown they can be compelled to return to the constitutional and legal order of BiH when necessary.
