A new escalation on the global stage is underway following U.S. President Joe Biden's decision to allow Ukrainian forces to use long-range weapons deep into Russian territory. Many nations are now warning their citizens to prepare for potential conflict. Vlado Vurusic, a foreign policy analyst from Croatia’s Jutarnji list, shared his insights on this topic.
“This move isn’t surprising, especially as Russia introduces a new nuclear doctrine,” Vurusic stated. He noted that the war in Ukraine is evolving into an international conflict, with North Korea now supplying weapons and troops to Russia.
Biden’s decision to approve these measures comes amid concerns over escalating tensions, especially given North Korea's involvement. “We're witnessing an increasingly international conflict, with some even suggesting we are already in the Third World War, though unaware of it,” Vurusic added.
Vurusic also discussed the potential impact of Donald Trump returning to power and the implications for U.S. aid to Ukraine. Trump has been vocal in his criticism of America’s military and financial support for Ukraine, promising a rapid end to the conflict without providing clear details. Vurusic emphasized that Europe alone could not replace American support if it were withdrawn: “If the U.S. pulls back, Europe simply lacks the capacity to fill that void.”
Regarding NATO, Vurusic commented on the recent appointment of Radmila Sekerinska, former Defense Minister of North Macedonia, as NATO Deputy Secretary-General. He emphasized the importance of this role for the Western Balkans, saying, “This is the first time someone from our region has been appointed to such a high NATO position. It’s a signal that NATO understands the significance of this part of Europe.”
