Freight train derails near Rijeka, Croatia, no injuries reported
Eleven wagons of a freight train carrying grain derailed on Saturday morning as it approached Meja station near Rijeka, causing extensive material damage but no injuries, railway infrastructure operator HZ Infrastruktura said.
The accident occurred at 9.25am as the train, operated by Transagent, was travelling towards Rijeka.
Before the derailment, the driver alerted the dispatcher that the brakes had failed and he could not stop the train, HŽ Infrastruktura said.
Eleven wagons plunged into a ravine, while the locomotive and two wagons remained at Meja station. The station has been closed to all traffic.
