Geological instability worsens in Sarajevo as ground cracks expand

According to the latest report from the FBiH Civil Protection Administration (FUCZ), underground water is further destabilizing the soil, causing flooding and erosion. Part of the terrain below a playground is sliding toward residential buildings on Ablakovina Street. To ensure timely warnings and possible evacuations, a 24-hour monitoring system is in place.

In Knjeginjac, located in the municipality of Istocni Stari Grad, no new construction activities or material deposits have been recorded. However, experts observed the subsidence of existing landfill material and signs of soil erosion. This site remains under continuous surveillance.

"Istocni Stari Grad is carrying out parcel clearing operations to dig drainage channels for surface water and lay down tamped material to stabilize the ground, ensuring easier access and safe manoeuvring for heavy vehicles," the FUCZ report states.

At Bistricki Potok, spanning Stari Grad Sarajevo and Istocni Stari Grad, the streambed remains partially blocked with earth, rocks, and fallen trees. No new changes or removal of existing obstacles have been noted, though continuous monitoring is in place to identify potential hazards early.

Following directives issued by the Sarajevo Canton Civil Protection Headquarters on November 1 and November 20, 2024, as well as existing evacuation plans of Stari Grad Sarajevo, civil protection officials are conducting regular inspections of the Bostarici, Ablakovina, and Ablakovina cikma neighbourhoods. Risk assessments and measures to relocate residents to safer housing, provided by the municipality, are currently underway.
