The proposed law on the registration of non-governmental organisations, once again drafted by the Government of Republika Srpska (RS) entity, would represent a serious setback for Bosnia and Herzegovina’s path to European Union membership, German Ambassador to BiH Thomas Fitschen has warned.

"The restrictions planned for civil society organisations in Republika Srpska are in direct contradiction to fundamental rights and democratic values as guaranteed within the European Union. An open and free civic space is essential for democratic progress and the country's EU perspective," Fitschen stated.

The Ambassador urged the RS Government and the RS National Assembly to abandon the legislative proposal.

The EU Delegation in Sarajevo has also expressed concern, stating that the adoption of such legislation—along with proposed amendments to the Republika Srpska Criminal Code that would remove gender identity as a protected category—poses a threat to fundamental rights and democratic principles.
