German Minister declared persona non grata in BiH's RS entity, escorted out
Germany’s Minister for Europe and Climate, Anna Lührmann, is on an official visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina. After a series of meetings with state officials in the BiH's Federation (FBiH) entity, Lührmann headed to the other Bosnian entity, Republika Srpska (RS), for a meeting with representatives of the Party of Democratic Progress (PDP) in Banja Luka. However, the meeting was abruptly canceled at the last minute.
The meeting with Igor Crnadak, PDP vice president, and other party representatives was scheduled for 5 PM but did not take place because Lührmann was declared persona non grata in RS. Republika Srpska’s President Milorad Dodik ordered the police to escort her out of the entity.
"We were supposed to have a meeting, but the RS government called us and said, according to protocol, that the German delegation had been declared unwelcome and was to be escorted out of RS," Igor Crnadak confirmed for N1.
Although the meeting had already been announced, Dodik earlier posted on X that German Minister Lührmann had "sneaked into Banja Luka like any unwanted visitor to meet her protégés in a basement."
"Look at what once-powerful Germany has come to. I expect the police of Republika Srpska to permanently escort her out of RS soon," wrote Dodik, visibly irritated by Germany’s recent sanctions against him and his political allies, including Nenad Stevandic, Speaker of the RS National Assembly, and Radovan Viskovic, Prime Minister of RS.
In addition to Germany, Austria has also imposed sanctions on Dodik, including a travel ban for him and his two allies. However, this may not be the end, as Germany has now called on other EU countries to impose sanctions on the entire entity of Republika Srpska.
Earlier on Friday, Lührmann met with BiH’s Foreign Minister Elmedin Konakovic, Chairwoman of the Council of Ministers Borjana Krišto, and BiH Presidency member Denis Becirovic.
