The concept of ‘constituent peoples’ in Bosnia is “not democratic” and should be abolished, German MP Jasmina Hostert told N1, adding that the fact the Bundestag adopted its recent resolution on BiH represents a signal that Germany is paying attention to the Western Balkans, especially in light of the war in Ukraine.
“Both Germany and the EU are concerned about the possibility of the war spreading to this part of Europe, and that is why I am glad that the focus is again on BiH. The opposition CDU also voted for the resolution. We want a better future for Bosnia and Herzegovina and for it to be granted EU candidate status,” said Hostert, a member of Germany’s Parliament Social Democratic Party.
She noted that Germany also decided to send its forces to reinforce the EUFOR mission in the country.
She stressed that “now it is the time to react” to the developments in BiH and that “it is clear to everyone that we cannot leave BiH where it is now for the next 15, 20 years.”
“We need to distance ourselves from the nationalist forces that are blocking Bosnia and Herzegovina from being a state for its citizens and from becoming a member of the EU. If they had a similar principle in Germany, I could never be an MP. That needs to change, so that everything is not divided among three ethnic groups anymore, as it is now,” Hostert said.
She stressed that BiH should be “a country for all citizens, regardless of their heritage or religious group,” she said, adding that BiH’s current constitutional setup is “not democratic”.
