The incumbent High Representative in BiH, Valentin Inzko, became a toothless tiger, German MP Josip Juratovic told N1 on Monday, adding that the newly appointed German diplomat Christian Schmidt will not be able to perform wonders.
“One can hope that Christian Schmidt will help, but Schmidt can't work miracles if there are no political structures for it. It’s clear that cooperation on the ground is needed, as well as political support from the outside. The help can be in the context that the work of political structures in BiH must be done on the ground,” he commented.
He also said that Valentin Inzko had reduced Bonn powers and that this was because the political structures in BiH asked the international community to create their own policy, to take responsibility for the future of that country and that the Bonn powers, which give the High Representative to impose laws or sanction local politicians, were reduced.
“Inzko has become a toothless tiger, everything has turned out to be slow,” Juratovic said.
When it comes to Russia's opposition to Schmidt’s appointment as the new High Representative in BiH, he said that it is crucial for legitimacy to be recognized by the international community and that it did not matter whether Russia was for or against it.
“Russia is protesting, but I don’t believe that it will seriously oppose the decision of the United Nations,” he noted.
“Russia's statement regarding the NATO approach was to be expected, but the fact is that Russia tolerates BiH's path to the EU and on that path, BiH must gain sovereignty and decide for itself whether to join NATO and therefore it is less important how Russia expresses itself. I think it's more of a classic Russian protest,” he said.
Speaking about constant challenges to Bosnia’s internal decisions will stop, he said that it is a question of BiH itself, meaning the very set up of the country’s political structures.
