Germany will not be involved in the financing of projects in BiH’s Republika Srpska (RS) entity after the contract expires soon, the German Embassy confirmed for Radio Free Europe (RSE) on Wednesday.
In August of last year, the German government gradually suspended the projects, citing as the reason the “secessionist policy” of the authorities of the RS entity under the rule of President Milorad Dodik. reports Radio Free Europe.
This refers to four infrastructure projects, with a total value of 105 million euros.
“The same (secessionist activities) have not been withdrawn, as demanded by the Federal Government. Instead, President Dodik further escalated the political crisis. The final termination of the four projects was therefore a logical consequence”, the embassy said.
The Embassy, however, did not comment on the agreement between the entity governments of the RS and Hungary according to which Hungarian companies would take over the financing of projects that Germany abandoned.
The government of the RS announced that Hungary will take over the financing of the projects on the day when the country's delegation, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orban, visited Banja Luka.
“It is difficult to explain to German taxpayers why Germany should support with a significant sum an entity which, according to the statements of its president, is openly thinking about leaving Bosnia and Herzegovina,” the German Embassy in Sarajevo told RSE.
It said that Germany supports BiH in its process of joining the European Union and that it is ready to additionally intensify cooperation with BiH and the entities, with preconditions.
“The fundamental requirement is the preservation of peace, the rule of law and the territorial integrity of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina. We continue our cooperation with civil society in Republika Srpska. The same applies to state and regional projects of German development cooperation”, the statement said.
