Germany’s Foreign Affairs Minister has decided to withdraw the proposal to award the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany to Israeli historian Gideon Greif, known in Bosnia for his denial of the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide.

This was confirmed in a letter German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier sent to Dr. Esnaf Begic, President of the Board of Directors of the Islamic College in the city of Osnabruck.
“The Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs has withdrawn his proposal to award Professor Greif the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Professor Greif was therefore not awarded the Order of Merit. This decision does not diminish the merits that Professor Greif gained in researching the Holocaust and German Jews who emigrated to Israel,” the letter said, according to politicki.ba.

Greif was the head of a commission that published a controversial report that denies a genocide took place in the Bosnian town of Srebrenica. The commission was established by the government of Bosnia’s Serb-majority Republika Srpska (RS) entity.

The commission’s report was strongly criticised by survivors of the 1995 genocide, officials, and even by the World Jewish Congress.
