The Green Mobility Summit 2024 has commenced in Sarajevo, bringing together numerous experts from Bosnia and Herzegovina, the region, and across Europe. Over the course of the two-day summit, attendees will present the latest research aimed at promoting sustainable and eco-friendly transportation.

Matej Zakonjsek, Director of the Transport Community, highlighted the critical impact of transportation on pollution levels, noting, “Transport, along with the energy sector, is a major contributor to pollution. If we do not take action, pollution levels could double by 2050. We are already witnessing significant climate changes, including severe floods in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which have caused extensive damage to infrastructure and transportation systems. Decision-makers and local authorities are beginning to recognize the effects of climate change. We are here today to discuss sustainable futures and preventive measures. Sarajevo's new trams and trolleybuses are positive steps toward the green and sustainable future we aspire to.”

Adebayo Babajide, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation in BiH, reiterated the EU's commitment to helping the region transition to sustainable development and reduce emissions by 2050. He stated, “The conversation about a sustainable, green future is not just about reducing pollution's negative effects; it’s about creating new infrastructure, new jobs, and everything related to sustainable futures. Unfortunately, the Western Balkans face many challenges, such as traffic congestion, air and noise pollution. This summit is a significant benefit for the region.”

Adnan Steta, the Cantonal Minister of Transport, praised Sarajevo’s efforts in integrating urban mobility with green transportation policies. He remarked, “Those of us living, working, or visiting Sarajevo can already see significant changes. We have reconstructed the railway, introduced new trolleybuses and trams, built a railway line to Hrasnica, and expanded the trolleybus network to Vogošća. We plan to further purchase new trams and trolleybuses and are working on a tram network project to Dobrinja. For the first time, we will purchase electric buses. We have also integrated trains into the public transport system.”

The summit serves as a platform for discussing innovative solutions and collaborative efforts to advance sustainable transportation and address the environmental challenges facing the region.
