Haris Pasovic, a renowned Bosnian director, discussed the 30th anniversary of the Sarajevo Film Festival (SFF) and its impact on both the city and the country during an interview with Novi dan. Reflecting on the festival's journey, Pasovic shared his thoughts on whether the SFF has surpassed its own potential and if the state is fully leveraging the opportunities it presents.
“When I first envisioned the film festival amid the sound of falling grenades, no one could have imagined it would reach this level. More than 20,000 spectators attended even during the war—it was a victory of life,” Pasovic recalled. He emphasized that the festival owes its existence to the people of Sarajevo, saying, “Without Sarajevo, the festival would not exist.”
Pasovic expressed concern over the declining multiculturalism in Sarajevo, stating, “Sarajevo had the potential and still has it to be a European center. The festival belongs to all people.” He also noted that the involvement of politicians on the red carpet, which some may find controversial, is a natural consequence of the festival's growth.
Regarding the city's infrastructure and the festival's logistics, Pasovic suggested that the government should analyze and improve certain aspects, such as the early closure of streets during the event, to better accommodate residents. He also highlighted the need for a comprehensive strategy to improve the city's air quality and energy efficiency, particularly through building insulation.
Pasovic warned about the future challenges posed by artificial intelligence, especially in the arts, and stressed the importance of strategic thinking for Sarajevo's future. “We must fight for our place and explore new models,” he urged, pointing out the need for the city to embrace change and innovation.
Concluding the interview, Pasovic expressed his greatest joy in seeing the success of local films, particularly those made by his former students, underscoring the importance of nurturing homegrown talent.
