Hazardous air pollution grips Sarajevo and surrounding cities

Sarajevo currently ranks as the most polluted city. As of 3:00 pm, the Air Quality Index (AQI) spiked to 473, a level classified as hazardous to the entire population. A similarly dire situation is unfolding in Visoko, where the AQI reached 322.

The NGO Eko Akcija has issued an urgent warning to residents in Sarajevo and Visoko, advising them to avoid all outdoor physical exertion due to the risk of serious health complications. Vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, the elderly, children, and those with respiratory or heart conditions, are urged to remain indoors.

Extremely unhealthy air is being reported in several other urban centers. As of mid-afternoon, AQI levels were recorded at:

• Prijedor: 292
• Ilijas: 291
• Vogosca: 274
• Tuzla: 244
• Kakanj: 235
• Hadzici: 227
• Banja Luka: 219

In these areas, the general public faces an increased risk of respiratory issues, while individuals with asthma may experience a significant worsening of symptoms. Health experts recommend that everyone avoid prolonged or intense outdoor activity, while high-risk groups should stay inside entirely.

In contrast, clear air was only recorded in a few locations today, including Gacko (44), Trebinje (37), Ivan Sedlo (26), and Bihać (12).

The Federal Hydrometeorological Institute predicts no significant improvement in the coming days. Forecasts call for mostly cloudy skies with rain in Herzegovina and snow in Bosnia. While moderate winds are expected, the negative effects of pollution will likely persist, particularly during the morning and evening hours in valleys and industrial zones.

Outdoor workers are advised to limit strenuous tasks. Anyone required to spend time outside should wear protective masks equipped with FFP2 or FFP3 respiratory filters.
