Dragan Covic, the leader of the Croat Democratic Union of Bosnia and Herzegovina (HDZ BiH), responded publicly to the final verdict issued against his coalition partner, Milorad Dodik, the president of Republika Srpska (RS) entity, emphasising the importance of respecting court decisions for the functioning of any society.

“Respect for judicial verdicts is essential to the functioning of every society”, Covic stated in a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), commenting on the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s confirmation of Dodik’s one-year prison sentence and six-year ban from holding public office.

Covic, whose party is in a coalition with Dodik’s Alliance of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD), used the occasion to appeal for urgent steps toward stabilising the political climate in the country and preventing potential security threats.

“We need wisdom and dialogue to overcome the challenges and responsibly build the European future of Bosnia and Herzegovina”, he said.

Dodik was found guilty of refusing to implement decisions issued by High Representative Christian Schmidt. The final ruling was handed down on Friday by the Court of BiH, triggering strong political reactions across the country and from the international community.
