HDZ BiH party vice-president Darijana Filipovic has said that her party is ready to engage in talks with the US administration about the construction of a gas pipeline that would connect Bosnia and Herzegovina with Croatia, despite not being invited to Wednesday's meeting organised by US diplomats.
“This is a key interest for the Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and thus for Bosnia and Herzegovina itself, and we are ready to work on its solutions. We are open to discussions with the US administration and with all interested parties who want to help us in this process,” Filipovic, who is also a member of the BiH state parliament, said in a statement to the media.
US Ambassador to BiH Michael Murphy, together with Assistant Secretary of State for the Western Balkans Alexander Kasanoff, organised the meeting at the Parliament of the Federation of BiH with representatives of political parties that have deputies in the House of Representatives, not inviting only representatives of the HDZ BiH. At the meeting, the political parties were urged to submit the Southern Gas Interconnection Law to parliament in December.
The HDZ BiH and its leader Dragan Covic insist on the establishment of a new company, Southern Gas Interconnection, headquartered in Mostar, which would build and manage the gas pipeline connecting BiH with the Croatian gas network and LNG terminal.
This is strongly opposed by US Ambassador Murphy, who insists that the gas operator with headquarters in Sarajevo, BH Gas, should handle the project. Murphy accused Covic of supporting Russian interests by insisting on the new company.
Filipovic believes that the only solution to the dispute over the gas connection with Croatia is an agreement between domestic politicians and the US administration.
Currently, BiH's only gas supply is through the Turkish Stream pipeline, which carries gas from Russia's Gazprom. BH Gas from Sarajevo is the intermediary for the Federation of BiH in this gas business.
