Huge amounts of garbage, waste, sludge, debris from destroyed homes, and the aftermath of heavy rain, floods, and landslides have piled up in front of the Grabovica and Jablanica Hydroelectric Power Plants.

As reported by Bljesak.info, items from homes destroyed by landslides are among the waste collected at the dam in Grabovica.

A team from the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s (FBiH) Water Inspectorate visited the site, stating that “special attention will be given to the cleaning of sediments and addressing threats to reservoirs in the Neretva Valley.”

“During the visit, in coordination with the mobile team from Elektroprivreda BiH, the Inspectorate inspected the reservoirs and confirmed that all floating waste is being gathered at the dams of the Grabovica and Jablanica hydroelectric plants. Elektroprivreda BiH has contracted an authorized company to remove this waste. Waste collection activities will continue until further notice, and there are currently no reported impacts on the operation of the hydroelectric plants,” the statement said.

The FBiH Inspectorate also noted that to prevent the disposal of solid waste into rivers, reservoirs, and shorelines at rehabilitation sites, they have recommended quickly designating a proper landfill for solid rock and earth materials. This is intended to prevent damage to the hydropower plants, potential blockages, or new floods caused by rising water levels due to waste being deposited into rivers and along their banks.
