Thick fog and smog have engulfed the capital city of Sarajevo for days, making the city one of the most polluted cities in the world. On Monday evening it topped the list of the most polluted cities of the world, according to monitoring network IQAir.
This means that the residents are exposed to very high levels of fine particulate matter marked as PM2.5, the indicator of harmful air pollution.
IQAir warned that the PM2.5 concentration as of 7 p.m. in Sarajevo was 330, which is 56 times the WHO annual air quality guideline value.
In these circumstances, people are adviced to avoid outdoor activities, to wear a mask outdoors, close windows to avoid dirty outdoor air and to run an air purifier.
Due to the heavy fog, most flights to and from Sarajevo International Airport were cancelled on Monday.
On Sunday, Sarajevo authorities declared 'Warning' over air pollution.
