In a phone conversation with Christian Schmidt, the German candidate for the post of High Representative in Bosnia, member of BiH’s tripartite Presidency, Sefik Dzaferovic, emphasised the importance of the role the Office of the High Representative (OHR) has in the country and the need for more involvement by the international community.
Schmidt is a likely candidate for taking over the OHR, which oversees the civilian implementation of the 1995 Dayton PEace Agreement, from Austrian diplomat Valentin Inzko.
Dzaferovic spoke to Schmidt about the functionality of the institutional system in Bosnia and the country’s path towards EU and NATO membership, the BiH Presidency said on Friday.
He stressed the importance of the OHR's role under the Dayton Peace Agreement, according to which BiH, due to the possibility of blockades, needs stronger support from the international community through the coordinated action of Washington and Brussels, it said.
Dzaferovic’s colleague in the Presidency from Bosnia’s Serb-majority Republika Srpska (RS) entity, Milorad Dodik, who currently chairs the institution, also spoke to Schmidt via phone on Thursday, telling him the opposite.
Dodik recalled it was the official stance of Republika Srpska that the OHR should be shut down.
