Recent field research in Hutovo Blato Nature Park has identified 38 endangered plant species across 22 families. The findings, part of the "Monitoring the Condition and Mapping of the Spawning Areas of Endemic Fish Species in Hutovo Blato" project, were carried out by the Center for Investments and Entrepreneurship Development (CIRP).
The research also recorded 18 endemic plant species from nine different families. The diverse vegetation in the Deransko Blato area of the Park includes a variety of ecosystems such as mountains, floodplains, swamps, and water-dominant regions.
Visnja Bukvic, a member of the expert team, emphasized the importance of the Park's vegetation.
“The largest area is covered by a combination of water surfaces with water lilies, lotuses, and reeds—about 34.3 percent. Reeds, rushes, and sedges cover 14.8 percent, while free water surfaces comprise 30.6 percent. Reed beds are critical as they provide essential spawning grounds for many fish species,” she stated.
The research results are being used to establish a GIS database that will define key zones for the spawning of endemic fish species, incorporating detailed vegetation data. The project, still ongoing, is supported by Bosnia’s Federation (FBiH) Environmental Protection Fund, contributing 79,000 Bosnian marks, with CIRP providing an additional 21,000 marks in co-financing.
