In a letter to Pope Francis, the Institute For Research of Genocide Canada (IGC) urged the religious leader to “raise his voice” against the plan of the High Representative of the international community in Bosnia to impose electoral reform which would “permanently destabilize Bosnia and Herzegovina and Europe".

“We support your meaningful apology to the Indigenous people of Canada for the genocide perpetrated by the Roman Catholic Church, after more than 50 years. It is an important historical step not only for Canada but for the world. A historic day for those who fight for the truth, justice and the culture of remembrance. Your apology for the Christian support for the colonizing mentality of that time, which the Canadian Truth and Reconciliation Commission quite rightly called cultural genocide, is an important step toward a better world,” the IGCsaid in the letter to the Pope, who is currently on a visit to Canada.

The Institute then pointed out that there are concerns about Bosnia and Herzegovina as well.

“We, the surviving victims of the genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina, who live in Canada, deeply sympathize with the members of the First Nation, the Metis and Inuit in Canada, who were victims of cultural genocide, who were not even allowed to speak their native languages. We know very well what such crimes mean,” the letter says.

“Guided by your morally strong sentence spoken during your visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina, when you said that Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina have a special significance for the whole world and that they show that different people can live together in cooperation, we ask you to use your moral authority to raise your voice against the current extremely dangerous tendencies on the part of certain international factors, whose goal is the ethnic division of Bosnia and Herzegovina”, the IGC said.

“By introducing the announced discriminatory Election Law, Mr. Schmidt would permanently divide Bosnia and Herzegovina into ethnic territories and create preconditions for further destabilization of the whole of Europe, which is in complete contradiction to your vision of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Such a decision would favour a party whose predecessors committed aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina and who were convicted of Joint Criminal Enterprise against Bosnia and Herzegovina during the aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1992-1995,” it said.

“Please stop it because such a decision will permanently destabilize Bosnia and Herzegovina and Europe. This would cause democracy and European values to lose the battle. This would also call your vision of Bosnia and Herzegovina into question,” the letter ends.
