The heavy rainfall that began two days ago in Bosnia and Herzegovina has caused severe problems in Sarajevo, particularly at Trebevic, where concerns over landslides have existed for years. The situation has now significantly worsened, as witnessed by the N1 news team on the ground.

The most critical area is Curine Njive, where deep cracks in the ground are expanding, uprooted trees are scattered, and the earth is sliding dangerously close to homes. The landslide is now just 15 meters from residential buildings. The rain is exacerbating the problem, flooding the streets and causing water to rush down from Curine Njive to the main road, resulting in roadblocks and asphalt damage in Komatin. The local community of Sirokaca is particularly affected as well.

Footage captured by N1 photojournalists shows waterlogged soil, streams running past homes, and severe flooding in the Ablakovina area. In Komatin, the accumulated water has lifted sections of asphalt. Although traffic has not been completely halted, movement is difficult due to the high water levels.

Local authorities, including representatives from Civil Protection in Stari Grad Sarajevo and the Sirokaca local community, are on-site assessing the damage. According to the head of the Sirokaca local council, a massive accumulation of water at Curine Njive overwhelmed the soil, leading to uncontrolled water flows down to the neighbourhoods of Bostarici, Ablakovina, Komatin, and Sirokaca. At one point, traffic was temporarily halted due to the road damage.

“So far, the municipal Civil Protection team has not inspected this specific area, but they are now on-site assessing the situation to determine further action. For now, we have only placed warning signs urging caution due to the damaged asphalt,” the local council head told N1.

Significant ground movement has been recorded in Curine Njive, with large amounts of water saturating the soil and increasing the cracks. The affected area has been cordoned off with caution tape and warning signs, while a former football field in the area has turned into a lake.

“This morning at 7:30, a torrent of water began flowing as heavy rain had been falling non-stop for 24 hours. Residents tried to prevent water from entering their homes—most succeeded, but some did not. So far, 22 families have been evacuated, while others are waiting for relocation as alternative housing is being arranged,” a local resident said.

Residents fear that the landslide, a long-standing issue, could soon be fully activated. The crisis has escalated following a recent tragedy in Jablanica, which has intensified discussions about the danger. Locals claim they have repeatedly warned the authorities, but little has been done. “The situation is far worse now, and it is becoming increasingly likely that the landslide will be triggered,” said local resident Samir Isakovic, adding that a full resolution is unlikely before summer due to ongoing planning and adverse weather conditions.
