The ArchDaily web portal published a list of 15 best architecture pieces across the globe, one of which is the Ljubljana Mosque and Islamic Cultural Centre.

“Much like its historical predecessors – the case of Sarajevo mosques during 19th century being a nearby example, where mosque complexes – built by rich donors – were the starting points, the ‘seeds’ for the development of the new parts of the city, the new complex becomes one such thing for this part of Ljubljana,” Bevk Perovic architecture office told ArchDaily.

The Islamic Cultural Center and the mosque in Ljubljana were built on a little more than 12,000 square meters, and additional open areas are a cascading park and harem of the mosque on 5,000 square meters. The place of worship can accommodate 1,400 believers.

In 2008, the Islamic Community bought land to build a mosque in the Slovenian capital. The cornerstone was laid on September 14, 2013. The mosque opened in June 2020.

According to the authors, the ‘specificity’ of the new location for the Islamic Religious and Cultural Centre is precisely its complete lack of ‘specificity’ – an area that is near the city centre, but abandoned and forgotten, in a fragile undeveloped state, with an uncertain urban future.

The centre consists of a religious school building, a cultural and office programme, an apartment building for the employees of the community, a restaurant, as well as the first-ever mosque in Slovenia, accompanied by car parking in the basement.

The mosque, sitting on and opening fully towards the square to allow for an extension of the prayer space on the outside during large gatherings of the congregation, is the central element of the new complex, the web portal said.
