The Bosnian Croat member of the country’s tripartite Presidency, Zeljko Komsic, dedicated a large part of his speech on March 1, BiH’s Independence Day, to recent “foreign interventionism” which he argued is contrary to democratic standards and the will of citizens to live in a country that ensured equality for all.
Komsic began his speech by saying that the fight for independence and sovereignty is still ongoing.
“Opponents of the independence and existence of Bosnia and Herzegovina did not achieve their goals, even with armed aggression against BiH as an internationally recognized state,” he said.
“Bosnia and Herzegovina has survived in its recognizable international framework, despite everything, and even despite the so-called international community. The outlines of that struggle in the last years, and even in the last months, are particularly visible. Unfortunately, our country is now faced not only with the greater-state aspirations of its neighbours and their traditional attempts to divide Bosnia and Herzegovina but also with inappropriate foreign interventionism that may have seemed confusing, strange, and almost unbelievable to us at first. So confusing, strange and unbelievable that even many did not want to believe their eyes,” Komsic said.
“Then logical questions arose – where did this come from all of a sudden? Actually, it was not that sudden, because let us remember the experience of the war, the disappearance of human rights, equality, democratic standards, democracy in general,” he continued.
“The nature of that interventionism and the solutions that are trying to be imposed are contrary to all democratic standards, but also contrary to the March 1 determination of citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the equality of all citizens and peoples living in this country. The way in which these solutions are being imposed, despite the will of the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is brazen and rude,” he stressed.
He then compared to situation to the war in BiH, and how the international community acted then.
“Let's just remember the arms embargo against the defenders of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the cowardly instigation of the division of the country through the so-called peace plans and negotiations. Today, they offer us an embargo on democracy and respect for basic human rights, supposedly conciliatory agreements and plans that ultimately lead to the complete dismantling of Bosnian society with a certain division of the country as the end result. However, this is not at all a reason for any kind of pessimism, let alone defeatism,” he said.
“It is good that we finally know who is truly in favour of the real independence and sovereignty of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and who thinks that our legislation should be decided by foreigners and the governments of neighbouring countries (…) No one who has won freedom gives it up voluntarily. Sometimes it seems to us that they would leave us alone if we gave up our independence. They wouldn't, they would just persecute us even worse,” Komsic said.
