Bosnia and Herzegovina's Foreign Minister Elmedin Konakovic said on Sunday he will firmly advocate for the country to become a NATO member and will not allow the stances of Bosnian Serb politicians to block this goal.
At a press conference in Sarajevo, Konakovic said that at the last NATO summit held in Washington, he received confirmation of the alliance members’ interest in the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina and their readiness to assist in the event of any security crisis.
He recalled that his country's membership in NATO is a legal obligation and reaching that goal is important because Bosnia and Herzegovina needs a security umbrella “that heals Balkan wounds.”
“Our friends from the Alliance… will not allow some (secessionist) scenarios,” Konakovic said, expressing confidence that the US will not change its policy of support for Bosnia and Herzegovina, even if Donald Trump were to win the presidential elections.
The head of Bosnian diplomacy said that during his stay in the US and meetings with politicians from the Republican Party, he received strong assurances that this would be the case.
He stated that among prominent Republicans, there are many who “even more vigorously advocate for sanctions” and “a tougher stance towards secessionists,” arguing that those who believe that Trump's presence in the White House would give an opportunity to implement plans undermining Bosnia and Herzegovina's stability are mistaken.
Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik openly supports Trump's victory, claiming that it would strengthen the position of Republika Srpska and limit the sanctions policy to which he and his associates, as well as numerous companies from Republika Srpska that finance the current political leadership of the Serbian entity, are subjected.
