Konakovic with US Congressman Turner: US support crucial for preserving peace in BiH

Bosnia’s Foreign Minister Elmedin Konakovic met on Tuesday with US Congressman Michael Turner, Congressman Donald Norcross, and the Chargé d’Affaires of the US Embassy in BiH, John Ginkel. During the meeting, it was emphasized that US support is crucial for maintaining post-Dayton peace and stability in BiH.

Konakovic expressed gratitude to the United States for its consistent and long-standing support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, highlighting Congressman Turner’s personal commitment to security and defense issues in the country.
The meeting reaffirmed the strategic partnership between Bosnia and the US, with a particular emphasis on the importance of American support in preserving post-Dayton peace and stability.
Discussions also covered the current political situation in BiH, security, ongoing reform processes, and Euro-Atlantic integration.
Konakovic reiterated Bosnia’s commitment to continue on the path toward full NATO membership and called for stronger US support, especially in light of global security challenges. During the meeting, gratitude was expressed for ongoing American assistance in the modernization, training, and strengthening of the Armed Forces of BiH, with hopes that this cooperation will be further enhanced.
He called for increased support from the US Congress in countering actors who, as he noted, undermine the country’s stability. The discussions also highlighted the importance of combating corruption and organized crime, seen as key obstacles to reforms and BiH’s progress toward the European Union and NATO.
The meeting confirmed the importance of Bosnia’s EU membership perspective, as well as regional cooperation. Konakovic stressed that opening negotiations with the European Union is one of BiH’s key priorities and is crucial for the long-term stability and development of the Western Balkans.
Bilateral relations between BiH and the US, particularly in economic cooperation and energy, were also discussed. The significance of the South Gas Interconnection was highlighted as a strategic energy project that will contribute to diversifying energy sources, strengthening Bosnia’s energy security, and deepening partnership with the United States, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of BiH reported.
