Legend returns: Restored Bruce Lee statue unveiled in Mostar

The statue, originally erected in 2005 by Croatian sculptor Ivan Fijolic, was removed for repairs after a regrettable act of vandalism in early March 2024. The restoration was a complex and costly international effort, involving transport to Croatia to be worked on by the original artist.

A cultural and tourism milestone

Elvira Cemalovic, Director of the Mostar Tourist Board (TZGM), emphasised the statue’s global appeal, particularly for visitors from China, who represent a dominant segment of the local tourism market. "This is not just an attraction for Chinese citizens, but for all tourists. I hope the citizens of Mostar will show responsibility and nurture these landmarks," she stated.

The total investment for the reparation amounted to over 35,000 Bosnian marks (approximately €17,895). To prevent future damage, the city is installing dedicated lighting and paving slabs to protect the surrounding grass, while calls for increased surveillance and park wardens have intensified.

Strengthening security and penalties

The President of the Mostar City Council, Djani Rahimic, used the unveiling to call for stricter measures against vandals. He suggested that higher levels of government should consider introducing community service as a punishment, forcing those who damage public property to maintain it themselves.

"Mostar was the first city in the world to receive a Bruce Lee statue," Rahimic noted. "I am glad that we can offer something unique to attract new guests."

Main Advisor to the City of Mostar, Ines Sulic, echoed these sentiments, noting that the return of this worldwide symbol of unity is a significant day for the city.
