The painting "Magdalena", which has become a symbol of works of art that were stolen from Bosnia and Herzegovina, will soon return home, House of Representatives representative, Sasa Magazinovic, announced on Tuesday.
“Magdalena” is the work of painter Djoko Mazalic, and it was stolen from the family collection of Damirka and Enver Mulabdic.
“Enver Mulabdic contacted me today to announce the wonderful news – Magdalena will return home. This is the same Magdalena whose name was changed in Serbia and whose new ‘owner’ contacted me to ask for an apology and ask if I hate the Serbian people – only because I am asking for the BiH national monument to be returned home,” Magazinovic posted on social media.
He added that the painting is currently at a police station in Serbia, and that it is now up to Interpol and institutions in BiH and Serbia to resolve the matter.
Magazinovic spoke out about the issue before.
“During the nineties, a huge number of works of art disappeared from the territory of the former Yugoslavia. All states have an obligation to return what belongs to others. I am dealing with one painting from the collection that has been declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina and has much greater significance. A painting by Djoka Mazalic owned by the Mulabdic family. The specificity of this painting is that it is exhibited in catalogues in Serbia, they changed its name and declared it a national treasure of Serbia. Interpol is looking for that painting, our institutions know about that problem and nobody reacted,” Magazinovic said last year.
