He was found guilty of planning and coordinating the attack in mid-2023—aiming to seriously intimidate the population and destabilize society—along with known associates. Using internet applications on his mobile phone, he planned to carry out the attack by placing an explosive device at the "Bosna" mosque in Zenica.
In addition to the prison sentence, Kapic was ordered to undergo mandatory psychiatric treatment.
A previous ruling by the State Court had sentenced him to a total of one year and ten months in prison for traveling from Sarajevo International Airport to Istanbul on July 15, 2013, then illegally crossing the border into Syria with the intent to fight for the so-called Islamic State in Syria and Iraq. He remained there until August 25, 2013, and was also convicted for illegal possession of weapons.
His detention has been extended for up to nine months or until a new court decision is made.
An appeal against this verdict is allowed before the Appellate Panel of the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina, reports BIRN BiH.
