Survivors and officials gathered in Sarajevo to mark the 31st anniversary of the first Markale market massacre, a tragic event that remains deeply etched in memory. Hasan Banda, who was severely wounded in the attack, recalled the horror of that day.
"I came to Markale to buy something for my children. Suddenly, I heard screams. I was seriously wounded and taken to the hospital, where I stayed for a month," he said.
On February 5, 1994, a mortar shell fired from positions held by the Army of Republika Srpska hit the crowded Markale market, killing 68 people and injuring 142. A second massacre occurred on August 28, 1995, killing 43 and wounding 84 civilians. These attacks became symbols of the brutal siege of Sarajevo.

The siege, which lasted from April 1992 to February 1996, saw around 350,000 residents trapped under relentless shelling and sniper fire. Over 11,500 people, including 1,601 children, lost their lives. Nearly 500,000 shells were fired at the city, with a record 3,777 hitting Sarajevo on July 22, 1993.
War criminals responsible for the atrocities have faced justice. Former Republika Srpska President Radovan Karadzic and General Ratko Mladic were sentenced to life imprisonment for their roles in terrorizing Sarajevo. Stanislav Galic, commander of the Sarajevo-Romanija Corps, was convicted for orchestrating the attacks on civilians, while Dragomir Milosevic received a 29-year sentence for crimes committed during the siege.
"We must never forget the truth," said Bosnian Presidency member Denis Becirovic. "A nation that forgets its past risks repeating it in the future."
