Massive fire engulfs Zagreb’s Vjesnik Tower, dozens of firefighters battling flames

A large fire broke out around 23:10 on Monday night at the Vjesnik Tower in Zagreb, spreading vertically through the building, consuming multiple floors and eventually reaching the roof. Due to the scale and intensity of the blaze, a significant number of firefighters were deployed to the scene, Croatian Index webportal reported.

According to available information, no one was inside the building at the moment the fire erupted. The structure, considered one of Zagreb’s notable landmarks, quickly became engulfed as flames moved upward through various levels.
Authorities confirmed that 93 firefighters with 30 vehicles were engaged in extinguishing the fire. Conditions at the site appeared considerably improved by around 6 am, with the large open flames no longer visible, although several floors continues to burn.

“It keeps reigniting on different floors, archives and furniture are catching fire. It’s also crucial to ensure firefighters are not put in danger, so the operation is taking place both inside and outside the building. There are some suspicions, but an investigation will be conducted,” Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomasevic said early this morning, emphasizing that the damage is total.
The cause of the fire remains unknown. Based on the extent of destruction, authorities and witnesses fear that the blaze will completely consume one of Zagreb’s long-standing symbols.
