Citizens of Sarajevo, Gradacac, Zenica, Tuzla and Mostar took to the streets on Monday to protest after the triple murder that took place in Gradacac last week, when Nermin Sulejmanovic killed his unmarried wife Nizama Hecimovic, and then two others. He posted a video of the heinous murder on social networks. Numerous experts, associations and civil society, as well as the family of the femicide victim stressed that her murder was partly due to the carelessness and ignorance of the system.
While the citizens are protesting, the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina could not agree on declaring a Day of Mourning on the state level. Ministers from the territory of BiH’s RS entity voted against the initiative, arguing that such decisions are made on the entity level. Both the RS entity and the Federation (FBiH) entity eventually declared the Day of Mourning for Wednesday, August 16.
Nizama Hecimovic was laid to rest on Monday in Gradacac, while the other two victims will be buried on Tuesday. After the funeral, the citizens of Gradacac began gathering in the Alija Izetbegovic Square.
Protests also kicked off in Sarajevo, and one of the main initiators was the mayor Benjamina Karic, who said that it is high time for the institutions to take responsibility.
Participants gathered in front of the Sacred Heart Cathedral and will walk to the Aria Center. Karic is among the participants, as well as BiH Presidency members Denis Becirovic and FBiH entity Interior Minister Ramo.
Karic read a set of demands, including a thorough investigation into the case in order to determine the possible responsibility of the police or judiciary in the case and sanctions against those who may be responsible.
One of the demands is for femicide to be defined as a special form of murder and treated as such by the law.
