Cooperation between Sarajevo and Ankara, ongoing since 1994, will be further enhanced in the coming period, with a special focus on tourism, cultural exchange and strengthening institutional ties, Ankara Mayor Mansur Yavas said during his visit to Sarajevo marking April 6, the Day of the City of Sarajevo.

He noted that the long-standing twin-city relations between the two capitals have already produced concrete results, recalling projects such as the construction and opening of the Trebevic cable car.

"Cooperation between Sarajevo and Ankara has lasted for many years and we will strive to further improve it in all areas in the coming period," Yavas told FENA.

He emphasized that, despite differences in legislation, similarities in the organization of city administrations provide a solid basis for further cooperation.

"Sarajevo can contribute to Ankara in many ways, and vice versa, so we will seek to apply our positive experiences. As sister cities, this cooperation allows us to learn from one another. At the same time, we can further enrich it, especially through cultural exchange," the Ankara mayor said.

Speaking about the implementation of specific projects, Yavac highlighted that communication with Sarajevo Mayor Samir Avdic is continuous, although certain initiatives require additional approvals.

"We maintain close contact with the Mayor of Sarajevo and communicate directly about the city’s needs. Based on those requests, we seek approval from the City Council, while some decisions require consent from higher levels of government, which is why certain projects are still pending," he explained.

He also pointed out that Avdic’s familiarity with circumstances in Turkey represents an additional advantage in strengthening cooperation.

"Mayor Avdic is well acquainted with the situation in Turkey and clearly understands what can be implemented and how he can contribute to our cooperation. I believe that, thanks to this, relations between Ankara and Sarajevo will be further improved," Yavas said.

He singled out tourism as one of the key areas of future cooperation, noting the growing number of Turkish tourists in Sarajevo.

"During a walk through Bascarsija, I noticed a large number of tourists from Turkey, as well as many similarities between our communities, particularly with the municipality of Beypazarı, where I previously served as mayor. The style of bazaars, culture and crafts are similar," he said.

He added that the introduction of a direct flight between Ankara and Sarajevo in July this year will further strengthen ties between the two cities and bring a significantly higher number of visitors from the Turkish capital.

At the end of the interview, he extended congratulations on April 6, the Day of the City, conveying greetings from the capital of Turkey and on behalf of the Turkish people.
