Hollywood star Meg Ryan conducted a Masterclass at the Bosnian Cultural Center (BKC) as part of this year’s Sarajevo Film Festival (SFF), where she emphasized that acting is a continuous learning process, influenced by various people in the film industry.
The renowned American actress participated in the Masterclass program, moderated by Bosnian director Danis Tanovic.
“I'm glad to be here, I'm honored to attend, it's truly a privilege to be here with you,” Ryan said at the beginning of the session.
She shared the story of how she began her acting career, initially studying journalism and taking up acting to cover university expenses.
“I'm actually an actress without formal acting education, and I learned gradually along the way,” Ryan noted, stressing that acting is a lifelong learning process.
She also expressed her surprise at becoming an actress, given that she didn't show much talent on stage as a child.
“I'm surprised I'm an actress because, during a school ceremony, I got confused on stage. But later, I developed that beginner's mindset, which helped me because as an actor, you don’t always see the bigger picture. It's about the emotions while you're acting, and you always learn new things from other actors and directors. Each role is different—some you accept, some you don't, and some require a lot of research,” Ryan explained.
A Hollywood star known for her versatility and natural charm in every role she plays, Ryan will also present a special screening of her 1998 hit romantic comedy You've Got Mail at Coca-Cola Open Air Cinema. The famous actress will greet the audience at the same venue where this film was screened 25 years ago, at the 5th Sarajevo Film Festival in 1999.
The Masterclass was a special opportunity to gain insight into key aspects of Meg Ryan's career and her new film “What Happens Later,” which will also be screened at the Festival. The romantic comedy, directed, written, and starring Ryan alongside David Duchovny, is her second directorial work, following the independent film “Ithaca” from 2015, produced by Bleecker Street Media.
