The memorial was built through donations, mostly from residents of Knezina and nearby villages.
According to organisers Faruk Imamovic and Franjo Pasalic, more than half of the required funds were donated by one of Beslic’s friends. The construction of the memorial cost more than 18,000 Bosnian marks.
Beslic’s son Dino attended the ceremony and could not hide his emotions.
“Many thanks to the people who started this initiative. This is a great honour and it means a lot to us. Thank you to everyone who came to mark this moment,” he told N1.
Organisers said the memorial was designed to be modest, just as Beslic himself was. The photograph featured on the memorial was taken by Vanja Lisac.
Halid Beslic never forgot the place he came from. He often visited his native region, sang about it in his songs and drew inspiration from it throughout his career.
