Members of the European Parliament, Viola von Cramon-Taubadel and Tineke Strik, welcomed the decision by the High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina to use his special powers in order to secure the funds for the 2022 elections in BiH and strongly criticised the strongest Croat ethnic party in the country for its “political games” regarding the issue.

Christian Schmidt, who is the international community's official overseeing the civilian implementation of the 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement in BiH, used the Bonn powers on Tuesday.

“With this decision, I order the following, and that is that the Central Election Commission will receive the amount of 12.5 million marks, which was initially determined for the preparation and organising of the elections,” Schmidt explained.

The EP members commented on the decision via Twitter, with both of them criticising the Croat Democratic Union in BiH (HDZ BiH).

“HDZ games with the state’s future are irresponsible & would lead to further deterioration of citizens’ rights! I thus commend this important step of High Representative Schmidt to act through his ‘Bonn Powers’ and secure the remaining funds for the proper conduct of general elections in BiH,” Viola von Cramon tweeted.

“After the Council of Ministers managed to only adopt part of the budget for the October elections, the High Representative secured the remaining amount through his Bonn Powers. A brave and important step, ending HDZ's political games and giving a voice to the BiH citizens through elections,” Tineke Strik tweeted.
