Ongoing conflict in the Middle East and the subsequent cancellation of flights are severely impacting the tourism sector in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Experts warn that the consequences of these disruptions may persist throughout the year, as key air links to the Gulf region remain severed.

Haris Fazlagic, Head of the Sarajevo Canton Tourism Board, confirmed to FENA that direct flights from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the Emirates have been halted.

"When planes are not flying, nobody is coming," Fazlagic stated, noting that the impact is already visible. While arrivals from these markets are typically lower during Ramadan, the usual post-Eid influx is now at risk. In response, the Board is redirecting promotional efforts toward domestic tourism and European markets, specifically neighboring countries and those within a few hours' drive, such as Slovenia, Austria, and Germany.

The Sarajevo Tourist Guides Association "Vucko" reports even more staggering figures. President Edin Ogresevic revealed that cancellations from the Middle East, Asia, and Australia have reached 100%. "Tourists from Australia and Asia often travel via global hubs like Dubai and Doha. The suspension of these routes creates a domino effect," Ogresevic explained.

Current estimates suggest that total tourism turnover in Bosnia and Herzegovina could drop by approximately 20% on an annual basis. With distant markets currently inaccessible, the industry is shifting its focus to low-cost airline arrivals from European cities like London and destinations in Italy. Industry leaders emphasize that Sarajevo’s reputation as an affordable and safe destination may help attract European travelers looking for closer, more secure alternatives during this period of global instability.
