Although it was known for years as a Turkish-sponsored highway that is supposed to connect Sarajevo with Belgrade, the Minister of Communication and Traffic of Bosnia and Herzegovina revealed on Tuesday that negotiations are underway with a Russian state fund and that Turkey should be the contractor.
Turkey was supposed to handle the financing but “I think talks have begun on the terms of financing by the Russian state agency,” said Minister Vojin Mitrovic.
He clarified that what is being considered is a loan Bosnia would pay back.
At a meeting of the Minister of Transport and Communications with the prime ministers of Bosnia’s two entities, representatives of the Brcko District, and the directors of the RS Highways and the FBiH Highways, the key question was the route through Brcko.
The Minister said that there are five or six versions on the table and that he suggested one of them but that authorities in Brcko disagreed.
“The proposed version is much longer compared to the planning documentation,” he said.
“According to the planning documentation, the length through the Brcko District is about 31 km, and all other variants that were considered and proposed by the Institute are 53.54 km long,” Mitrović explained.
He said that the institute dealing with the project in Brcko was established a year or two ago and that it does not have enough experience, adding that hiring a more experienced firm as a consultant was discussed.
