Gathering at the town square in Ilidza before setting off together, this year's participants are traveling in stages, with one group departing today and a second arriving Saturday. As the riders passed through Sarajevo, drivers on the main road honked their horns in a show of solidarity.
The riders are scheduled to arrive in Potocari this afternoon. Following tradition, they will enter in complete silence, after which the motorcyclists will assist with funeral organization and transport the coffins to the open-air prayer area.
Tomorrow, July 11, a collective funeral will be held for 10 identified victims. On Thursday, the solemn convoy transporting their remains from Visoko arrived at the Memorial Center. The procession stopped briefly in Srebrenica at the town mosque, and at key sites in Sarajevo including the Presidency Building, the Monument to the Murdered Children of Besieged Sarajevo, Markale, and the City Hall.
Crucially, the remains to be buried this year are incomplete, a fact that causes immense pain to families who searched for their loved ones for years. However, relatives consented to the burials to establish a final resting place.
Following the collective funeral, the re-exhumation process will resume to integrate newly discovered skeletal remains recovered from secondary and tertiary mass graves. Starting July 14, authorities plan to open 48 graves to add newly found bones to previously buried remains, continuing the effort to complete the skeletons of the genocide victims.
