On Sunday evening, at sunset, Muslims across BiH will pray the first Taraweeh, marking the beginning of Ramadan. The spirit of this holy month can certainly be felt in Sarajevo.
“A month of happiness, forgiveness, joy, a month of giving. It is also a month of observing what people are like, what people do, whether we are people or have become animals,” said one of the Sarajevo citizens N1 talked to.
For many muslims in BiH’s capital, however, the beginning of Ramadan is not as joyous as usually.
“I want there to be peace. Balance and peace in the whole world, in Palestine and in Ukraine, we know what it's like”, said one of the citizens.
“When I see these children in Palestine, I want to cry,” she said.
The humanitarian organization Pomozi.ba Association, as part of the “Ramadan Action”, began distributing close to 500 tons of food for socially vulnerable citizens throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina. A total of 25 trucks departed on Sunday morning from Sarajevo to some 20 towns across the country.
“The food will be distributed throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina. All cantons, part of the Republika Srpska entity, a large number of associations and organizations will receive this food”, said Elvir Karalic, the head of the Pomozi.ba association.
He said that this is only part of the campaign and that a total of one thousand tons of food will be distributed across the country throughout Ramadan.
“The distribution of these 500 tons is planned in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the remaining 500 tons are already being prepared for distribution, part of it to Palestine, part of it to Syria and Turkey, to the areas that were hit by a terrible earthquake at this time last year. I can freely say that this is our biggest Ramadan campaign so far,” said Karalic.
The aid convoy sent today from Sarajevo to the rest of BiH contains packages with basic food items such as flour, oil, sugar and salt.
