Muslims in Bosnia and Herzegovina are celebrating on Friday one of the greatest religious feasts, Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of the holy month of fasting, Ramadan. Pročitaj više

The holiday has been marked across the country with a morning prayer. The central ceremony led by Grand Mufti Husein Kavazovic was held at Gazi Husrev Bey's mosque in Sarajevo.

Eid al-Fitr is observed for three days and the first day is spent with family. The second day is also marked as the Martyr's Day (Day of Shaheed), which people usually spend visiting the graves of the closest family members. The third day is mostly spent with friends, neighbours and acquaintances.

Although he cancelled the traditional reception this year, Head of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina Husein Kavazovic will hold the congratulatory ceremony.

Speaking at the morning prayer, Kavazovic emphasised the importance of a homeland in one's life, stressing that this is something loved as one's own life. He also stressed the necessity to sympathise with those in need.

“We reject, accuse and condemn each other every day, with no shame or embarrassment. Give us strength to look at others with a look that recognises the faces of a brother and sister. Awaken in us a sense of shame and nobility, which springs from compassion for all people, especially those exposed to suffering, regardless of their origin, be they poor, the sick, or the emigrants. Dear God, help us rediscover in our hearts the art of compassion and sympathy, which will make us better people and better believers,” said Kavazovic, addressing the believers at the prayer.
