The Appeals Division of the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina found Hasan Dupovac and Alisa (Mutap) Ramic guilty of concealing evidence in the case of the death of Dzenan Memic in 2016, in the case 'Zijad Mutap and others' case. Pročitaj više
Alisa Ramic was sentenced to two and a half years in prison while Hasan Dupovac, a former police officer, to three years in prison.
The other three defendants were acquitted.
The defendants were accused of having committed the criminal offence of organized crime related to criminal offences, illegal mediation, assisting the perpetrator after the criminal offence was committed, preventing the proving of the case and giving a false statement.
“All this time we’ve been saying there will be justice. This is a grain of justice, but it is there. This is the fifth trial. The appellate panel showed where justice lies in this country. Thanks to them, we will go further and we won’t stop. Thanks to Mr Ifet Feraget (attorney). Thanks to Mrs. [Gordana] Tadic (judge), who started the investigation, and it cost her her dismissal. I don't know what else to out of joy,” Dzenan’s father Muriz Memic said.
He added that he is satisfied with the verdict.
“I am pleased. The main culprit, Alisa Mutap said she is the most famous. She is famous, so she got two and a half years in prison. Dupovac will never be a police officer again, that is s success of this country. The Court showed that we are not lying, but telling the truth,” Memic concluded.
The defendants Zijad Mutap, Hasan Dupovac, Alisa Ramic, Josip Baric and Muamer Ozegovic were accused of joining an organized crime group, which was formed by Zijad Mutap in order to cover up the evidence of the way in which Dzenan Memic sustained severe, life-threatening injuries on February 8, 2016, as a result of which he died.
This is the second instance verdict, however, the defence has the right to appeal because they were acquitted in the first-instance proceedings, and convicted in the Court of Appeal after the proceedings were returned for retrial.
According to the first instance verdict, all the accused were acquitted, but in March of this year, the Appellate Panel of the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina cancelled the first instance verdict and ordered a retrial.
Ifet Feragete said after the verdict he was satisfied but that it could have been better. He noted that as of Friday, the answer to the question ‘who could be next’ can be sensed, adding that he has filed criminal charges against other 45 people.
“They (the defendants) knowingly and deliberately conducted the investigation in such a way as to show it as a traffic accident. They were faking amnesia. Alisa's false testimony was a way to mislead the whole story. Ultimately, today we got an answer to the question of who could be next,” the Memic family attorney said.
In this regard, he announced he has filed criminal charges against 45 individuals. Among them are Sarajevo cantonal prosecutor Dalida Burzic, eight prosecutors, some of whom work in the state prosecutor's office, Chief Federation (FBiH) entity Prosecutor Tihomir Jurka, and FBiH Prosecutor Vlado Knezevic.
