New Palestinian Ambassador to BiH Sylvia Kharoof: Sarajevo is the European Jerusalem

Ambassador Kharoof noted that since her arrival at the airport, she has felt a deep sincerity and kindness from the people of Bosnia. She remarked that she feels at home, as if she has not moved to a foreign country, and noted a positive energy that she only otherwise feels in Jerusalem. According to the Ambassador, it is no wonder Sarajevo is called the European Jerusalem, as it is very similar to the old part of Jerusalem and possesses a unique spirituality. She also highlighted cultural similarities, specifically mentioning local cuisine such as burek, various pies, and the Ramadan specialty topa, which she frequently praises to her family.

Strengthening bilateral ties

The Ambassador emphasized that the relationship between Bosnians and Palestinians is rooted in history and shared experiences. She pointed out that many families share bonds through marriage and that Palestinians view Bosnia and Herzegovina as an inspiration for recovery. For the Palestinian people, Bosnia serves as an example of how a country can rebuild and persevere after crisis, war, and genocide. Her diplomatic mission aims to enhance political, economic, and social relations by coordinating joint activities, boosting tourism and trade, and collaborating on education initiatives.

From civil society to high diplomacy

Reflecting on her transition from the non-governmental sector, where she led the "Volunteer for Hope" foundation, to high diplomacy, Kharoof explained that for Palestinians, politics is inseparable from daily life. She stated that economic empowerment and supporting marginalized groups, especially in Jerusalem, are essential tools for ensuring the Palestinian people can remain on their land in the face of displacement and ethnic cleansing.

Addressing the devastating situation in Gaza, the Ambassador provided somber statistics regarding the human toll of the conflict. She reported that 75,000 people have been killed and over 100,000 injured, with approximately 45,000 orphans and tens of thousands of victims still remaining under the rubble. She criticized the international community's inaction despite UN Security Council resolutions and highlighted the tragic impact of the closed Rafah border crossing, which has halted the entry of humanitarian aid.

Despite everything the people have experienced, Kharoof concluded that Gaza will continue to live, asserting that Israel will not succeed in its plans to displace the population and that Palestine will continue to demand international justice and the application of international law.
