Nine children diagnosed with meningitis have been hospitalized at the Pediatric Clinic of the University Clinical Center of Republika Srpska (UKC RS), confirmed officials from the institution to Nezavisne novine. The affected children range from 17 months to 12 years of age, and all are currently reported to be in stable condition.

In response to the outbreak, the Ministry of Education and Culture of RS has granted permission for the “Sveti Sava” Elementary School in Kotor Varos to conduct online classes for all first-grade students. The decision follows the emergence of viral meningitis cases within the school, according to statements made to the Srna news agency. Additionally, three cases have been reported at the “Larisa Sugic” kindergarten in the same municipality.

The Institute of Public Health and the local Health Center are conducting epidemiological investigations to identify the source and transmission routes of the infection. Preventive measures have been implemented to curb further spread.

The Institute has confirmed that this is an outbreak of enteroviral meningitis, typically transmitted through unclean hands. Recommendations for prevention include frequent hand washing, use of disinfectants, surface cleaning, and regular ventilation of indoor spaces.
