Many citizens, including family members and friends of Dzenan Memic, a young man who tragically died on February 8, 2016 under still unexplained circumstances, gathered in Sarajevo’s Ilidza neighbourhood on Saturday to mark the ninth anniversary of the attack that ended his life. The controversial case is widely seen as a symbol of the rampant corruption in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

According to the first official version, Memic suffered fatal injuries in a traffic accident while walking with his girlfriend, Alisa Mutap, along Velika Aleja in Ilidza. However, his family, led by his father Muriz Memic, has consistently maintained from the very beginning that Dzenan was murdered and that the case was fabricated to cover up the real perpetrators.

Citizens gathered at the memorial “Wounded Stone,” erected by the family in remembrance of the young man, at the site of the attack. Among the gathered citizens was Latifa Pajic, who expressed deep frustration over the long-standing neglect of justice.

“The judiciary… it seems like a mafia criminal organization. They’ve been obstructing this justice for nine years and rubbing salt into the wound of a man whose child they killed. It’s no secret who killed the child, the whole of Sarajevo knows who killed him. Why is this being covered up so much? Is that justice, to cover up the murderer?” she asked.

Muriz Memic, the father of the murdered man, reiterated his dissatisfaction with the current state of the investigation and the judicial system.

“The mafia has won. Today, this gathering is the most difficult one for me. I will have to inform the citizens that the state has betrayed us, not just me, but all the citizens. But I see that I am not alone. Many citizens who have been deprived of their rights and others who have supported us all these years are here. Everyone says: ‘This doesn’t happen anywhere in the world.’ This happens in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the most corrupt country in the world,” he said.

Muriz Memic, who has led the fight for truth since the beginning of the investigation, emphasized that the investigation has not progressed, and those responsible are still not brought to justice.

“According to the latest information, I had a meeting at the Prosecutor’s Office, and they won’t even be brought in. They say they will investigate the murder. But as much as I care about the murder, I care about the accomplices. And here we see, we’ve reached a point where they are halting the investigation because of Dalida Burzic, Maid Cosic, Seval Kovacevic, Sakib Krem… who are the main culprits for all of this. I could get to the murderer tomorrow, but they must answer for it,” he said.

When a journalist asked what tools he has to proceed, Muriz responded:

“Believe me, I don’t know. I’ve said it, I won’t give up, I must bring this to an end. In the end, I said I would take justice into my own hands, and I will not give up for sure. I think they should take me seriously. I will avenge my son. I will not betray him. I’ve had a conversation with my effendi. I told him what he needs to say at the funeral when it comes to that. I know this will be hard for many to hear, but it’s not hard for me. The day they told me they were halting the investigation, I stopped crying, but not a day had passed before that I haven’t cried. Citizens understand what I am saying. I am not being unserious; the state is to blame, and I told the prosecutors, whatever I do, they will be responsible for it. They will bear the responsibility. They could have ended this in the best possible way and made the people happy, so we could reach justice through legal means, but clearly, they won’t,” Muriz Memic concluded.
