Officials mark April 6, the Day of City of Sarajevo
Sarajevo commemorated April 6, a date of immense historical significance, with wreath-laying ceremonies and tributes at the Eternal Flame, one of the city's most recognized symbols. Citizens and officials gathered to honor those who fought for the city’s freedom in 1945 and those who endured the siege from 1992 to 1995.
Following the tribute at the Eternal Flame, delegations visited the Martyrs' Cemetery "Kovaci," where they paid respects at the grave of Bosnia and Herzegovina's first President, Alija Izetbegovic. Floral tributes were also placed at memorials dedicated to children killed during Sarajevo’s siege, fallen police officers in Veliki Park, and the Vraca Memorial Park.
April 6 holds a unique place in Sarajevo’s history. On this day in 1945, the city was liberated from fascist occupation, marking a decisive victory for the anti-fascist resistance. Decades later, on April 6, 1992, Sarajevo faced a new challenge, as war erupted in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This date serves as a lasting reminder of the city’s resilience against oppression, intolerance, and hatred.
