OHR: Future of Bosnia and Herzegovina cannot rest on glorification of war criminals

The Office of the High Representative stated in connection with the state-organized funeral with military honors held in Belgrade for convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic, which was attended by political leadership and opposition politicians from the Republika Srpska entity, that the future of Bosnia and Herzegovina cannot be built by glorifying those responsible for the gravest crimes of the past.

A future marked by peace, prosperity, and mutual understanding must be grounded in respect for the dignity of every victim and respect for the truth, including as established by international and domestic tribunals, they added.
The OHR underlined that Ratko Mladic was a convicted war criminal who died while serving a life sentence. He was found guilty by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia of genocide in Srebrenica and crimes against humanity, and these convictions were upheld on appeal.
"Glorification of convicted war criminals, and denial of genocide and other war crimes create divisions, cause further pain to victims and their families, and undermine reconciliation. The OHR stands in solidarity with all victims, survivors, and their families," it is stated.
