OSCE Chairperson-in-Office and Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen is visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina, where she will hold a series of meetings with high-ranking officials to discuss security issues in the country and the region. Her first meeting was with Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Foreign Minister Elmedin Konakovic, after which she addressed the media.

At the start of her statement, she noted that this was her first visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina but certainly not the last.

“These are truly challenging times we are living in, but challenges also bring opportunities, and we should think in that direction as well. As the OSCE Chair, I want to send a strong signal that this visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina is extremely important, both bilaterally for Finland and for the OSCE. We have excellent ties with this country, and its stability is of great importance,” Valtonen stated.

She reiterated OSCE’s commitment to regional stability and assured Bosnia and Herzegovina of their full support, emphasizing respect for the country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and constitutional order.

“I am deeply concerned about the current crisis, which threatens the Constitution and endangers the fundamental freedoms of the people of this country. I call on all political leaders to respect the constitutional framework and refrain from actions that could lead to further destabilization. The Dayton Peace Agreement remains crucial for the stability and security of Bosnia and Herzegovina,” she stressed.

Valtonen underscored the importance of constructive dialogue for the country’s progress and highlighted the necessity of reforms for the well-being of all citizens and overall development.

“Reforms are also a fundamental element of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s integration path toward the EU, which we strongly support. Now is the time for leadership that strengthens the country’s democratic foundations and paves the way for a stable future. The OSCE stands by you in this process.

Our mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina is dedicated to strengthening democracy, promoting good governance, and protecting human rights while supporting a multinational and multiethnic society,” she said.

During her visit, Valtonen will also meet with members of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Presidency, representatives of the international community, and civil society organizations. She will also visit the OSCE Mission in Bosnia, Herzegovina, and Camp Butmir.
